Wish I had this book when I first started Javascript

Do you struggle when creating objects in Javascript?
Do you find the syntax to be non-intuitive and frustrating?
Do you know the difference between using a function as an object vs using an object literal?
Do you know how using object literals can simplify your code and create something similar to namespaces?
Do you know how to augment the type system -- for example, if wanted all strings to have a trim() method?
Do you know why the "new" statement is so dangerous? Do you know an alternative that eliminates the use of "new" entirely?

These are some of the topics that the book touches upon.

This book is aimed at someone with intermediate programming experience that wants to know the best way to create and use objects, arrays, types, etc. Crockford takes his experience with Javascript to show you best practices coding techniques and styles to use with Javascript. In addition, the book provides insights into what makes Javascript so confusing and what can be done about it.

You might ask "Isn't this stuff already covered in other books that I have?" The answer is no. For one, most other books use a psuedo-classical coding style (see below) to explain objects that is a source of confusion.

Javascript can be very confusing, especially for programmers who have extensive experience in other C-based languages (like myself). Writing good Javascript that uses objects, methods, etc. is hard. In Javascript, if you want to create objects, use inheritance and create methods, you have several different ways to write your code and it's difficult to know what the strengths and weaknesses of each are.

Crockford explains the problem plainly. Other C-based languages use class inheritance (Crockford calls this classical inheritance). Javascript, on the other hand, is the only popular language that uses prototype inheritance, which does not have classes. However, the syntax which Javascript uses to create object is Java-like (Crockford calls this pseudo-classical syntax). It's confusing, because it keeps you in a class-based frame of mind while working in a language that has no concept of classes.

Clarifying what's going on with the object model is the best part of this book. Crockford also explains other parts of Javascript that can be problematic and the techniques that he prefers for handling them. I don't necessarily agree with all of them, but the important thing is that he explains his reasoning.

To effectively learn Javascript, I recommend that you buy 1) a book that covers the details of the language and can be used as a reference (e.g. Javascript, the Definitive Guide) and 2) Crockford's book. Advanced programmers might also enjoy Pro Javascript Design Patterns, which shows a number of ways to combine Javascript with some of the GoF patterns. I would avoid any cookbook style books on Javascript, because you're better off using YUI, JQuery or one of the other Javascript libraries than writing your own drag-and-drops, calendars, etc.

There are a series of Yahoo! videos by Crockford that mirror the material in this book and can be found as podcasts under YUI Theater. They contain nearly all of the material in the book and probably a little more. Those videos are:

May Need a Warning Label

I thought the author's other "Missing Manual" on CSS was very good and said so. ( CSS: The Missing Manual ) I am not so sure about this one.

This book is meant to be a beginner book and it certainly does treat certain aspects of JavaScript well from that perspective. My problem is that the author has chosen to integrate a particular JavaScript framework, jQuery, into the examples, starting with the introductory chapter.

I have used jQuery and have a high opinion of it, esp. of its CSS-like selector syntax. However, I don't think I ever could have learned the basics of JavaScript using jQuery. jQuery has its own syntax and its own ways of doing things that are different from other JavaScript frameworks and certainly *much* different from generic JavaScript.

A true beginner is going to find it difficult separating what is applicable to the wide world of JavaScript from what will only be applicable in one particular circumstance.

Perhaps the book may be better labeled as a getting started with JavaScript and jQuery text.

A good book, but not all it could be.

Let me begin by saying that Head First Javascript is a good book, at least compared to any other JS books I've seen. It isn't, however, a particularly good "Head First" book.

What I mean by this is that the other Head First books I've used (XHTML & CSS, SQL, and C#) have been highly interactive, easy to use, and really got the concepts into my head. I was amazed that, after just a few days with these books, I could actually build professional-looking web pages that were rigorously standards compliant; or create complex applications in C# quickly and easily; or navigate the intricacies of building and using SQL databases. The Head First method certainly seemed to work.

So when I heard the HF people were producing a JS book, I was overjoyed. Sadly, it's been a bit of a letdown. The book smacks strongly of rushed production, lacking many of the features that makes the HF series special. For example, in the C# book, the authors take the reader through application construction in a step-by-step manner, carefully explaining everything as they go. The effect is of a very knowledgeable teacher standing over your shoulder and guiding you while you code. The reader is actively involved in every exercise, building their code from scratch. There are copies of every piece of code available for download at Head First's website, but these are merely tools for checking the reader's work.

In the Javascript book, however, much of the interactivity is missing. The book reads like a walkthrough of the code samples, with most of the user participation taking the form of pencil and paper exercises. The reader could actually complete the book without switching on her PC. Even the code solutions on the HF website seem to be just tossed up there, with the page numbers each example refers to contained in a Read Me file (the book itself just contains a general instruction to grab the code from the website, without any indication of which code).

This all sounds pretty negative, and I must confess to being somewhat disappointed with the book. That said, it's still far superior to any other JS book I've tried. By the end of Head First Javascript, I did feel that the general scope of Javascript had sunk into my brain. I had a feeling for its overall structure and the ways in which it could be applied. I know that I can now tackle a more advanced JS book and absorb the concepts much more easily.

What I don't feel is ready to sit down and write Javascript. The whole experience with this book was just too fragmentary and too lopsidedly didactic. The experience was insufficiently hands-on to enable me to become comfortable with the nitty gritty of JS scripting. When I finished HF's C#, XHTML, and SQL books, I could sit down and churn out code, with only a few O'Reilly Pocket Guides beside me to refresh my memory on syntax and structure. That's not been the case with Javascript.

Head First Javascript just seems to lack the "stickiness" of the other titles in the series.

Daimler-Benz conspired with the Nazis during the war.

The basic premise of this book is that Daimler-Benz, the maker of Mercedes-Benz automobiles, placed profit before principle and committed criminal acts during World War II. The evidence is displayed as if presented by a prosecutor in court. There is little room for doubt or deception. The book is not always easy to read and the story line is at times hard to follow. There are too many abbreviations that require frequent clarification. Maps should have been included that would have assisted the reader in following the location of the many Daimler-Benz plants. The "story" is important and represents an original contribution, however, the book could have been more "user friendly".

A view in to the past... understanding what has happened.

I rate this book specially for its contents, describing what happened during a difficult period of German History with an objective view.

The study of Daimler Benz history is a good case to see how things happened, what economic conditions were present, what management concepts were used at the time and a description of the development of production technology that made possible the German Industrial power to develop during the Third Reich.

It may also help understand the behavior of the managers in charge of the company, in relation to the human values involved.
This topic is difficult to handle with objectivity. I recommend reading Daniel Faber's book on Alfred Sloan of General Motors to have a feeling of how american top management behaved and thought during the 30's and the second world war(book title: Sloan Rules). It is important to understand how management in America thought their mission, their rights and what they thought was normal behavior to make a paralel to what their contemporaries in Germany were doing.

I think this book is must reading for anyone that is interested in the history of business.

Economic History of Daimler AG under a Corrup Regime

I'll start this book off noting that this book is really an economic history of the Daimler-Benz production from the late twenties through the end of WWII. It does not focus on racing, the vehicles themselves terribly much. If this is what you are looking for though It is a fantastic book that is very intelligently written. I would qualify that by saying that even as someone very well steeped in WWII German history and an intimate knowledge of Daimler Benz product and history there is a need to really know the back story. If this book was your among your first exploring the German economy during WWII, you'd probably do better starting with some general history.

The meat of the book really focuses on the production of engines and vehicles as DB takes over factories through the Reich with explicit help from Hitler's government and what the output was as the Reich expanded and inevitably collapsed. One of the more interesting elements of the book happens later on as the Allied bombing campaign continually destroys the factories and how DB responds by dispersing their production lines to mines and bunkers thus saving much of their equipment. Another interesting aspect of the book is how DB continued to develop a plan for a post war return to passenger vehicle development.

There's naturally some very horrible truths that are described in this book regarding forced labor and this is difficult reading to be sure. That said, this is a great case study of how a large manufacturer in the Third Reich had to politic their way to get government contracts and deal with a criminal leadership. I would recommend this book to anyone deeply interested in the economics of war as well as anyone who is a fan of Mercedes-Benz that wants to know the full history of the brand given that most histories do not focus on this time period.

Get this, you won't go wrong

There are 4 stages to learning: Unconsciously incompetent, where you have no idea what you don't know; Consciously incompetent, where you know you have a lot to learn; Consciously competent, where you can do what you need to do, but it takes work; and Unconsciously competent, where you don't even think about the technique any more. If you're reading this, you're at least to stage two. Congratulations.
This book deserves the highest praise I can give a book of instruction: it does exactly what it claims to do. But you still have to put in the work. There is no magic pill for talent. But this book provides a way of thinking about how to break down the learning process into manageable bites.
And don't forget: once you learn something new, play it in a song, not just endless scales. That's how you get good.

Clear, easy to use. I tried to study a bit every night on a 40 day hike through southern France. However, given the price particularly,a very serious criticism is that there is no audio in the eBook.

About the Author
Dr. Cathy Vatterott is an Associate Professor of Middle Level Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. During her career, she has been a junior high school teacher, a middle school principal, and a middle school parent. She is the author of over a dozen articles about education, published in such journals as the Middle School Journal, Schools in the Middle, Current Issues in Middle Level Education, and the New England League of Middle Schools Journal. Her first book, Academic Success through Empowering Students, was published by the National Middle School Association in 1999. Over the last 15 years, she has conducted workshops for hundreds of middle school teachers and principals, and has been a frequent presenter at the National Middle School Association's Annual Conference. She has developed an NCATE-approved university program for middle school certification at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and has prepared pre-service middle school teachers for over 10 years. She and her university students continue to work on-site with a student-focused middle school which serves as their Professional Development School. On a broader note, she is considered to be a national expert on the topic of K-12 homework, her latest research interest. She has presented her homework research to over 3000 educators and parents in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and has been interviewed as a homework expert by newspapers, magazines, television, and radio.

Very informative

I really hope that many teachers and parents read this book. It explains very well the undeniable benefits of standard-based grading. The sbg will help all students of all levels in many ways. As humans, we are very different from each other, which means that we learn differently. The sbg will help with this matter, to benefit mainly our students (and teachers too because it is satisfactory to know our students are learning for real), which will in the end benefit our society as well by producing highly capable professionals. A must read.

A Helpful Resource !

"Rethinking Grading" by Vatterott is an important contribution to the idea of developing meaningful metrics. The author discusses the need to teach higher order applications, student independent learning, solving complex problem sets and enabling mastery.

The idea of learning through experimentation and errors is promoted so that students can handle complexity and deep thinking. More pre-testing is recommended to refine teaching methodologies and probe for areas where learning can be bolstered or enhanced. A corollary is that standardized grading has its origins in quality feedback. Learning transfer is an area only tangentially covered by the author. Yet, this item is critical to understanding pre-requisites completely for the next sequential course.

A standard ELA test should require a writing sample, several paragraphs of reading, simple logic, synonyms, antonyms and not much else. The idea is to assess students quickly without engendering a lot of resistance to the testing itself. Ultimately, the objective is to determine whether or not everyone qualifies to advance to the next grade.

Another important aspect is identifying the matter of the test. Testing should be geared to the recommended grade-appropriate readings issued by the Public Libraries throughout the United States. Generally speaking, librarians set the reading goals and issue publicized lists of books appropriate for each grade level.

A related aspect concerns the texts issued by the largest educational publishers. It's the publishers that control the required readings and problem sets of the students. If students aren't doing enough critical thinking problems, then the publishers must create textbooks which reflect relevant critical thinking problem sets throughout.

Overall, "Rethinking Grading" is a helpful educational resource.

More clearly and concisely than anywhere else I’ve seen you’ve captured and articulated the differences
between traditional grading (and much more) and what we call Performance Based grading. Thank you for
this wonderful book. For a district who has been implementing our Performance Based system for 20 years,
this resource will help our entire team revisit some of the early difficult conversations through which we
struggled to set our Shared Purpose. Your book will strengthen our continuous improvement process and
ultimately our capacity to help each student. The examples you’ve included are most helpful as well.
