GREAT BOOK

I loved this book, and I know other women say Berman's books are too graphic, but I happen to be a "visual woman" and I love them precisely for that, specially because you find there real women, real men and not only young men, but also old men who still look great.

This book will help women to master balance not only in their sexual lives, but also in all other areas of our lives because sexual life is connected with every part of us. I do agree with Dr. Berman when she says that owning your sexual life is so empowering and liberating. If you know and own your sexual life, your sexual power; you can be really happy, really free, really powerful and absolutely 100% sexually satisfied. Having said that, I also think that having a great sexual parter and/or lover really helps alot. This is a book about selfworth, power and balance. We need to respect, love, and appreciate a real strong loving man, but we need to love ourselves even more!!! A must read for every woman!

After reading the whole book, I look at it as a reference guide to relationships. I have to disagree with another reviewer, because I think it would be helpful for single people or those in long-term relationships. There are little quizzes with each section to help you assess your issues with each particular area. The pictures are pretty graphic; if you don't want to see women naked from the top up, don't get this book. It is very tastefully done, however, and not offensive in itself, as these pictures are included as illustration and to help the reader with their own intimate times.

I haven't seen any other books like this and found it interesting and potentially helpful. Adults only!

Helpful but redundant

Fairclough provides a very thorough framework for using CDA that I found helpful with my own research. However after the first few chapters, the book gets rather redundant.
For a nice rounded overview of CDA, I would strongly suggest Blommaert's "Discourse: Key topics in sociolinguistics." If I had a choice, I would have purchased Blommaert's book, and pulled articles from Fairclough's work. Fairclough's paper, "Critical discourse analysis and the marketization of public discourse" (available free through Google Scholar) will give you a taste of Fairclough's particular approach to CDA, and you can decide from there whether or not you would like to purchase the book.

His cases range widely from intellectual property infringement to murder. He is a best-selling author of thirty computer training books, and his books have been translated and sold in more than a dozen languages and foreign countries. He has created more than twenty-five training DVDs and videos on various computer subjects. Robbins has advanced degrees from the University of California—Berkeley and the University of Michigan, has been an Information Systems manager and an Education Systems manager, and currently runs his own consulting and training company.

Russell Kirkland is Associate Professor of Religion and Asian Studies at the University of Georgia. Real Taoism

I have been trying for awhile to find accurate treatments of Taoism from actual scholars (not hacks who know nothing of Chinese history, religion, culture, or language - but have no problem filling the shelves at Barnes and Noble with fatuous fluff). This is an excellent book that not only covers the origins and development of Taoism from the perspective of the "Taoists" themselves (not from the perspective of Westerners who received most of their knowledge from often adversarial Confucians), but it even has an excellent section on "Cultivating the Tao" for those who are interested in putting Taoist traditions into practice.

Great exerpt:

"In the 20th Century West, Taoist practice was deeply misunderstood my narcissistic pseudo-Taoists, who falsely imagined that 'following the Tao' requires no more than 'going with the flow' or 'just being spontaneous.' To the contrary, Taoist practice traditionally rested upon self-discipline as 'the foundation that sets up the basic framework of mind and body in which alone the hard work of the path can be accomplished." (p. 202)

(Please remember that this is an academic source, so don't think you are going to read the "Tao of Poo" and then give the book a bad review when you see the big words. If you want something dumbed down, look elsewhere.)

Criticism of Taoist Scholarship

I bought this book because it had great reviews and it's hard to find good material on the practices and texts of Taoism beyond the level of Tao of Pooh and Taoism for Dummies. But upon reading this torture of a text I found the other reviewers must have had different interests than mine, for what I've found in the book is a state-of-the-union address on Taoist scholarship (mainly how 19th and 20th century translators have not taken into consideration this or that text or aspect of Chinese history) but as to a rigorous explanation of the different practices and beliefs of Taoists there is not much to go on in this book. The author seems more interested in showing off his scholarship of Chinese thought and presenting what Taoism IS NOT than of telling us what those texts he so profusely cites say about what Taoism IS.

In modern world only few learners of Taoism are blessed with a real teacher. The rest of us have to get by books, articles and similar sources. Unfortunately we quickly learn that there is a huge, stinky sewage of books by "experts" among which we are to seek for rare pearls.

This book is not only one of such pearls, it also teaches to deal with the sewage, to distinguish real scholarship from New Age "interpretations".

Yes, it is not an easy read because it is written more like research article, but if you are interested in essence of Taoist beliefs and philosophy this book absolutely worth the time you'll spend to read it.

But if you really believe that LeGuin is a Taoist then do not bother with this book.

About the Author

Jeremy Begbie is the inaugural holder of the Thomas A. Langford Research Professorship in Theology at Duke Divinity School, North Carolina, and founding Director of Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts. He teaches systematic theology, and specializes in the interface between theology and the arts. His particular research interest is the interplay between music and theology. He is also Senior Member at Wolfson College, Cambridge, and an Affiliated Lecturer in the Faculty of Music at the University of Cambridge. He is author of a number of books, including Voicing Creation's Praise: Towards a Theology of the Arts; Theology, Music and Time, and Resounding Truth: Christian Wisdom in the World of Music which won the Christianity Today 2008 Book Award in the Theology/Ethics Category. A professionally trained and active musician, Begbie has taught widely in the UK and North America, and delivered performance-lectures across the world.

This scholarly work from Jeremy Begbie offers a handful of essays that engage the modernist worldview, how it has affected our music, and how music might offer some paths leading beyond the stalemate that modernist philosophy and theology have left us with. Most readers will find this book overly scholarly (too nuanced, too sparse on explanations of philosophers and philosophical concepts, too lacking in passionate appeals), so I would only recommend this book to those deeply interested in both modernity and music. However, Begbie's collection of essays here are insightful into the nature of music, and he offers some profound analogies from the world of music that can aid our thinking and discussions about several areas of theology and philosophy, not to mention music itself. A note on my rating: For the average reader, I'd rate this book a 3, because most will struggle, but for those digging into faith and music at a more scholarly level, this book could well be a 5. For that reason, I chose the middle of the road and gave it a 4.
