Not what I expected
By Roses~N~Skulls
I was thrilled to find out Perfecting Patience did not take long at all to get published. With this being said, I think this novel was deserving of more time.
I LOVED Playing Patience and the only big complaint I had was Zeke, so needless to say, I was excited to see his character development in Perfecting Patience. Sadly, this was not the case.
Perfecting Patience starts off with Zeke and Patience reuniting after months of Zeke being on tour with his band Blow Hole. It's bitter sweet and perfectly romantic.
Then, everything falls apart and Patience is no longer the strong girl we met in Playing Patience. She was repeatedly raped by a man she thought was her father and dealt with it like a pro. She was strong-willed and happened to be one of my favorite female characters. I couldn't have been more proud of her then. Now, she's broken and it's as though everything comes crashing down on her.
Zeke...what to say about this young man that 'saved' Patience so to speak? Unfortunately for me, his character was still very unlikable and it didn't seem like he grew at all in the book. Yes, he said and did sickeningly sweet things for his girl (which would likely make any girl swoon), but even those didn't overrun the awful things that took place in this book.
The book was well written, and that's something I'll never have to worry about with Mrs. Vargo. This is perhaps the ONLY reason I was able to rate the book the way it's rated. I give it a 2.5 because I'm in between it being OK and not liking it. I didn't hate it, but I was let down as a reader. Everything seemed rushed, especially the conclusion, and the building up to Patience's 'problem'. I actually think the book should be renamed Problems with Patience. I didn't see a perfect Patience in this book at all, except for maybe the ending, but even that has me questioning it. If you want to know why, read below where I include spoilers.
***SPOILERS BELOW, READ NO FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK. NO JOKE.***
In Playing Patience, as I mentioned before, Patience is a very strong person for dealing with her issues. She handles them with grace for the most part, except for the ending where she murders her father. I don't really blame her; however, in this book Patience falls apart with panic attacks. A friend of hers who is on her soccer team in college gives her a pill to calm her down, I think it was Xanax. She eventually asks her for more, only to find out her friend has run out, so she gives her the name to her drug dealer. Patience starts buying the pills from this guy. We gradually learn that Patience starts getting addicted, I guess. I'm still not clear on this as the only time we see her take them is when she has a panic attack. She ends up overdosing towards the end of the book after her and Zeke break up, an accidental overdose when she mixed Xanax with another prescription her doctor gave her after Zeke accidentally hit her in the face. Her aunt (who she went to live with in case you didn't know that) calls Zeke and tells him and her words are 'she was taking an obscene amount of Xanax' and this is even before the overdose. WHEN?!!! I never got to see her addiction progress and boom all the sudden she's overdosing?
Anyhow, yes, onto Zeke. He's still Zeke. I saw him change a little. There was no sleeping around with women, he was with Patience so we kind of knew that wasn't going to happen anyway seeing as he never cheated on her at all in the previous book. He no longer is calling women skanks, which is a breath of fresh air. But, Zeke? Still smokes pot and still pummels guys out of jealousy. Get a grip man! What scenario caused this anger in Zeke? He catches Patience with her drug dealer two times and the first time her lie was played off pretty well, the second time? He realizes she has been lying to him, but instead of letting her explain anything he straight knocks the guy to the ground and beats the living crap out of him. His elbow accidentally hits Patience as she's trying to get Zeke to come to his senses. I mean, yes, I know Patience has been lying to him, but just because you think someone is cheating gives you no right to beat the crap out of them. I realize stuff like this happens in everyday life, but with everything that transpired in Playing Patience, I was expecting more from Zeke.
I felt like the entire book was rushed because in the ending after Zeke and Patience reunite, several years later we see Zeke sending his daughter off to school and a pregnant Patience. And, yes they got married. Since I didn't see Zeke grow much and still couldn't control his anger, it makes me wonder from the time they reunited after their breakup to the time they got married, how many other guys did he beat up and whatnot?
I was thrilled that Patience got the help she needed but it summed up to her saying "After six weeks, and so much therapy I wasn't sure if I could ever return to my psychology classes, I was released. I was set to see Dr. Jenson once a week and put on two prescription for my anxiety and depression." Yep--it sums up her recovery this way and that was disappointing. I would have liked to see her regression during her stay, because it's not easy overcoming an addiction. Would have been nice to see Patience's fighting side that we saw in the first book. I think that's what makes Patience, well, Patience. There's a fighter in there and I just didn't see it during this book. It would have also been nice to see how Zeke reacts while she's in the hospital. Perhaps show him being caring and understanding, because had that happened, I would've been satisfied with saying Zeke grew as a character. I don't know, to me he seemed selfish for not paying more attention to Patience and noticing something was off. Patience wasn't exactly brilliant when she lied to him about when he saw her with the drug dealer, explaining that her friend had a crush so she was talking to him for her. We're in college, not grade school. Also, the time she ran out of a restaurant freaking out and locked herself in the bathroom and tells Zeke that she had to go to the bathroom so bad. Zeke DOES question it, stating the obvious, that there was a bathroom at the restaurant, but then she says that there was a long line and she couldn't wait? Nope, not a genius excuse and by then Zeke should have been questioning her big time. It was blatantly obvious she was hiding something and Zeke sums it up to her cheating? I don't buy it.

I didn't want to write this review, but I feel like Mrs. Vargo needs to see this particular review to understand why some of her fans may not like a particular book so she can improved. I know that she holds the ability to captivate everyone with a unique story with well thought out characters and smooth writing, but she needs to see what the faults were with this book and yes, this is my own opinion, but sometimes an opinion can make you see something in a whole new light and you may actually find yourself wondering, "wow, it really does seem that way doesn't it? Okay, now what can I do to improve?"
Writing a book in two months (this is my guesstimated time it took her since the first book was released in April and this one in July) is no small feat, but taking a little bit more time on Zeke and Patience's story would have been well worth it, they deserve it as a couple and as their own persons.
Mrs. Vargo, You are an amazing writer and I hope you keep writing stories and giving me something to look forward to. I've loved the other two books you wrote and I know I can happily tune out my world with one of your future books.

heartbreaking and beautiful
By B from Prisoners of Print
Tabatha Vargo continues the story of Zeke and Patience in this emotionally tumultuous novella. Perfecting Patience is intense, heartbreaking, and full of feels. The inexplicable connection between Zeke and Patience is as powerful as ever, making this novella equal parts beautiful and devastating. Navigating life after the events of Playing Patience, this couple is faced with the exhilaration of living their lives free and in pursuit of their dreams while also dealing with the lingering emotional scars of the nightmare they endured. The sharp contrast between their newfound triumphs and enduring trials made this novella one heck of an emotional rollercoaster. Tabatha Vargo broke my heart and put it back together repeatedly before finally giving Zeke and Patience the happily ever after they unquestionably deserved in this short, sexy, and sweet story.
Perfecting Patience was a quick read, immediately pulling me back into the world of the Blow Hole Boys and reminding me why I fell so easily for Zeke and Patience to begin with. Tabatha Vargo packed a ton of heartache into this novella, detailing the haunting after effects of the trauma this couple faced. While the angst and self-destruction was very much true to the nature of the characters, I would have liked a bit more balance of the dark with the light. Patience and Zeke had already been through so much and I felt as if this novella was slightly too weighted towards the dark parts of their relationship only to abruptly end in the light. I especially would have liked to see further development of both characters and their outside relationships, including how Patience’s relationship with her sister had changed in the aftermath of their ordeal.
Despite the gut-wrenching and painful journey Zeke and Patience had to take in this novella, their story was gritty and raw and real in a way that sticks with you. Tabatha Vargo has done an incredible job addressing some serious issues, taking on Zeke and Patience’s demons and giving hope to anyone who might find pieces of themselves in these beautifully broken characters. Tabatha Vargo’s writing is touching, capturing the intense emotions of this novella and making her readers feel it all the way through. Filled with vibrant imagery, stirring narration, and dialogue that will make you want to both laugh and cry, this story will steal your breath and make you think. Perfecting Patience is a heavy and yet absolutely satisfying conclusion to this couple’s incredible story and I can’t wait to see what Tabatha Vargo has in store for the rest of the Blow Hole Boys.

At Last! Happiness For Patience and Zeke!
By C. Rushing
Patience and Zeke have to deal with the ghosts of their pasts in this second book. Trouble starts brewing early on, as it becomes apparent that Patience is not doing as well as she's letting on. When Patience decides to stay behind while Zeke goes on tour with his band, their fears and insecurities add to the already high stress levels and Patience seeks solace elsewhere. Just when you think they may have crossed the point of no return, ruining their relationship, secrets are revealed that change everything.
It has been quite a while since I read the first book and I was worried I wouldn't remember the details. Luckily, that wasn't the case. Even though they were both fighting their own demons, this book had a much lighter feel than the first book. I was glad to see them get their HEA after the hell they'd each lived through. If two characters ever deserved a break, it was them.
This was a good book and a quick read. After the events of book one, this book provided closure and peace. It was great to see these two finally escape their nightmares and find contentment. I wish I had read this book earlier. I would recommend it, but don't expect the dark and disturbing vibe that book one had.
